Lejanías

Part of being Latin American is feeling far away. Far from the north, far from those that have emigrated, and far from ourselves. That distance also produces a desire for us to be closer to one another, and connect over shared experiences and understandings. According to the Uruguayan-Spanish artist Joaquín Torres García, the Latin American perspective affirms that “our north is the south.” In other words, that the answers we seek are within ourselves, and that we need not aspire to “be from the North.” This idea serves as the point of departure for this exhibition. We are Nudo, an artist collective based in Cali, Colombia, that aims to open a dialogue with an expanded community. We explore notions of distance and how they define us. We are united by language and culture, and separated by geography, politics, and economics. We have arrived with our work in suitcases, bringing some warmth to the cold. These works intend to remind us that we are not alone.
